My main area of research is Applied Cognitive Systems. Essentially, how to use inspiration from natural intelligence to enable computers / machines / robots to behave usefully. This includes:
- Cognitive Robotics, such as Rehabilitation Robotics.
- Modern Heuristics for industrial application, such as data-mining medical data.
- Learning Classifier Systems (a branch of evolutionary computation), where applications include classification of salient objects in images, e.g. mammography.
My background/expertise is in Mechanical Engineering, Cybernetics (control, systems, feedback, and artificial intelligence), Mechatronics (including autonomous robotics) and Machine Learning. I work closely with Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Design.
