Professor XiaoQi Chen

University of Canterbury
Department of Mechanical Engineering

Prof XiaoQi Chen has been actively involved in assistive robotics/device and bio-instrumentation. He has worked on powered exoskeleton using artificial muscle for assist-as-needed rehabilitation for lower limbs, intention estimation algorithms, and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) in combination of mechanical movement for stroke rehabilitation. His approach of EMG-guided rehabilitation incorporating model-based control allows the effort (inputs) to be tuned and dynamically adjusted in achieving the optimal rehab results, and adaptable to varying conditions of patients. It will potentially result in innovative technology for effective rehab and commercialisable products for home-based healthcare.
